"And it came to pass that he stretched forth his hand and spake unto the people, saying: Behold, I am Jesus Christ, whom the prophets testified shall come into the world."

Kansas is the Sunflower State, but so far, the only sunflowers I've seen are these ones at the Historic Liberty Jail in Liberty, Missouri.

This is a land "which is choice above all other lands, which is the land that the Lord God hath covenanted" with his people to possess.

I've never felt closer to my baby brother than when we're 503 miles apart. Though really, since we're both serving missions in the midwest, he's the closest family to me right now. I love being engaged in the same work as him, syncing up our calls home to the rest of our family, and talking each other through hardship, and making jokes about mission life. He's willing to freeze to death biking around Chicago in the bleak winter if it means spreading the gospel to the people he loves. Happy Birthday Elder Smith!

This year I did something I've wanted, waited for, and worked for since 2016: I am serving a mission. My mission started on January 2, 2019, so I have spent every single day of this year, except for New Year's Day itself, serving God by sharing his gospel and the Book of Mormon with everyone I meet. The night after I read my mission assignment letter, I couldn't sleep because I kept tracing the outline of the state of Missouri in my mind. I was so, so happy that the Lord had found a place for me.

I would like to thank Stephanie Mumford Whitted for having me over for dinner on my first ever day as a missionary. I was so shy, and she connected with me and made me feel welcome. I've never forgotten that dinner.

Johanna Bringhurst for the lime and white chocolates she gave me as a call opening present. I never got a call opening party like most of my missionary friends, so that treat meant so much to me.
Dana Holland for teaching me to work hard and ride a bike.

Stacy Larsen for enabling me.

Taylor Fish and my friend Sophie for the courage, faith, and determination they showed in getting baptized when family members and others sought to dissuade them.

Amanda Fahrenbocker for letting us teach and baptize her daughter Saydi.

Joseph Paul and Sheril Marshall. I miss teaching you.

Ace Wheeler, for being Ace.

Lauren Beck for running my life for me while I'm absent from it.

Michaela Fielding for being my friend. Michaela, you will be a great missionary someday.

Max Murdock and the Fuimaono sisters for all the hard work they do to run the YSA.

Kryshonna Obiajulu for being a party and a half.

My mommy Shannon Smith for loving me and Brandon Smith, my baby brother in Chicago, for bantering with me and giving me helpful reality checks during our weekly chats.

Jeff Wolf and Cameron Hopkin for keeping me entertained from afar.

I love Independence and everything it represents and look forward to giving this place my heart as I serve it for the next six months of 2020.
